AANN Welcomes New Chapter

The American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN) warmly welcomes our newest chapter, Quad City AANN. The chapter, which was officially chartered on May 14, 2008, represents East Moline, Moline, and Rock Island, IL; Bettendorf and Davenport, IA; and surrounding areas. Quad City AANN, which currently has 12 members, has big plans for the future, starting with increasing membership and resources by inviting registered nurses from local hospitals to participate in the chapter. The chapter would also like to provide educational opportunities at each monthly meeting. Other plans include hosting a neuroscience workshop for nurses in the community and having chapter members participate in a neuroscience-related community service project by the end of 2009. If you would like to become involved in the Quad City Chapter, please contact its president, Lori Johnson, MSN RN CNRN, at johnsonlori@ihs.org.

Florida Chapter Presents Education Course

On May 28, 2008, the Northeast Florida Chapter collaborated with the five stroke centers in the greater Jacksonville, FL, area—Baptist Health, Flagler Hospital, Memorial Hospital, Mayo Clinic hospital, and Shands Jacksonville Medical Center—as well as Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, and St. John’s County Fire Rescue to present an educational event in recognition of Nurse’s Week, EMS Week, and Stroke Awareness Month. The daylong event was the Advanced Stroke Life Support Course, which had been developed more than 10 years ago by the Center for Research in Medical Education at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, and has been used since that time to train physicians, nurses, and EMS personnel in the assessment of stroke patients. Attendees earned eight nursing contact hours for successfully completing the course.
