Great Benefits of an AANN MembershipThe other day a nurse asked me, "Why should I join AANN?" Some of you may have had similar queries from your colleagues. How did you respond? Although the benefits may be obvious to long-time members, newer or prospective members may not be aware of all they have available to them through an AANN membership.
Education is one of the best benefits of joining AANN. The association offers innovative educational opportunities to learn more about the various aspects of neuroscience nursing including the annual meeting, CNRN review course, Foundations of Neuroscience Nursing, and the Core Curriculum. Live audio recordings from the meeting, Webcasts, and clinical practice guidelines are available online to members. The Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, published bimonthly and now available online, is also free with membership. Synapse E-News gives updates on hot topics in neuroscience nursing and keeps members informed about happenings across the association.

The opportunity to connect with other neuroscience nurses is frequently mentioned as a significant member benefit. Personally, I have made many lasting friendships with nurses I met through AANN. Special Focus Groups (SFGs)—
epilepsy, geriatrics, movement disorders, neuromuscular/MS, neuro-oncology, neurotrauma, pediatrics, spine, and stroke—allow members to share knowledge about their respective specialties. Each of the SFGs has a LISTSERV® available to all members as a way to communicate. These LISTSERVs are used to pose questions about best practice, discuss research, and share resources to improve patient care. Additionally, there is a LISTSERV dedicated to advanced practice topics.
I encourage you take to take advantage of these benefits, if you have not already done so. For more information, please visit our Web site at www.AANN.org. The next time someone asks why they should join AANN, you'll have the answer!

Cathy Cartwright, MSN RN PCNS
