AANN Member's Article Earns Top-10 Distinction

AANN member Lorraine Fields' article "DNR Does Not Mean No Care" in the October 2007 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (JNN) was Medscape Nursing's seventh-most-read article in 2008. Medscape is a part of the WebMD Health Professional Network, which offers medical information and education tools for specialists, primary care physicians, and other health professionals. Medscape Nursing specifically is devoted to the nursing field. AANN congratulates Fields on this extraordinary achievement and thanks her for her contributions to AANN and neuroscience nursing.

AANN Member Recognized for Exceptional CARE

Each year, the New Jersey State Nurses Association (NJSNA) recognizes four nurses for excellence in clinical practice (C), administration (A), research (R), and education (E). The CARE awards require a nomination and letters of support. Recipients and guests attend a celebration the evening before the state nursing convention. Our immediate past-president, Sue Fowler, PhD RN CNRN FAHA, is being honored this year for her excellence in research. Dr. Fowler also received a CARE award for clinical practice when she was a neuroscience advanced practice nurse in the 1990s. Sue presently works at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ, as a clinical nurse researcher. She has been instrumental in promoting best-practice initiatives for AANN and advocating for the evidence to drive our decision making. We extend our congratulations to this nursing leader.

AANN Member Inducted into AAN as Fellow

Hilaire Thompson, PhD RN CNRN, was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) on November 8, 2008, during the Academy's 35th Annual Meeting and Conference in Scottsdale, AZ.
"The Academy is comprised of many of the nation's top nursing executives, policymakers, scholars, researchers, and practitioners," said Academy President Pam Mitchell, PhD RN FAAN. "Being selected as an Academy Fellow is an important recognition of one's contributions to nursing and health care."
Selection criteria include evidence of significant contributions to nursing and health care and each nominee must be sponsored by two current Academy fellows. Selection is based, in part, on the extent to which nominees' nursing careers influence health policies for the benefit of all Americans. Dr. Thompson, who serves as editor of the AANN Clinical Practice Guideline Series, was recognized for her research to reduce disability and improve outcomes in patients with traumatic brain injury and for her service activities, including many roles within AANN.
An invitation to fellowship is more than recognition of one's accomplishments within the nursing profession. The Academy serves the public and the nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge. Every day across America, the Academy and its members create and execute knowledge-driven and policy-related initiatives to reform America's healthcare system. In this capacity, Dr. Thompson is now serving on an expert panel workgroup focused on healthy acute and critical care environments for older adults.
