National Guideline Clearinghouse Adds AANN Guidelines to Its Prestigious Database

Brenda Moss Feinberg, ELS

AANN celebrates an unparalleled honor this spring as National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC), a comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents, prepares to add five AANN Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) to its offerings. The guidelines, Care of the Patient with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage; Guide to the Care of the Patient with Seizures, 2nd Edition; Guide to the Care of the Hospitalized Patient with Ischemic Stroke, 2nd edition; Neurologic Assessment of the Older Adult: A Guide for Nurses; and Nursing Management of Adults with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, will be searchable on the NGC Web site (www.guideline.gov) in approximately 4 weeks.
Inclusion of these CPGs into the NGC confirms the importance of the contributions AANN makes to the body of knowledge and collection of best practices in neuroscience nursing. This milestone directly correlates to specific language in AANN's mission and vision statements.
"Our primary goal in submitting the AANN guidelines to NGC for consideration was to disseminate them to the largest audience possible to facilitate excellence in care to neuroscience patients," says Hilaire J. Thompson, PhD RN CNRN FAAN, editor of AANN's Clinical Practice Guideline Series. "The NGC site has more than 1 million visits each month from people whose primary reason for visiting is to find evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. With the inclusion of our guidelines on the site, nurses and other interested practitioners who search for these conditions will be able to access this information more readily to provide safe and effective care and develop unit or hospital protocols."
NGC inclusion was Thompson's goal when she applied for AANN's CPG editor position in 2006. "I felt that the then-Clinical Practice Series needed to become systematically developed and evidence-based," she says. "It was personally rewarding to learn that five guidelines developed during my tenure were accepted into NGC."
Participants at the March Editorial Board meeting launched a more rigorous continuous quality improvement review of the CPGs using Appraisal of Guidelines Research and Evaluation (AGREE) criteria. The board will make changes to accommodate more clarity in the guideline annual review and add implementation tools such as a quick reference guide for users.
"The spirit of dedication to improve the care of neuroscience patients was shared by the many nurse authors, peer reviewers, and CPG editorial board members who volunteered to produce these guidelines; without them, this would not be possible," Thompson says. "The guidelines benefit so many nurses, hospitals, clinics, and patients and their families. I have been impressed with the AANN membership's tremendous response to the CPG's various calls for volunteers. We tap into a wide variety of expertise in our members: clinical, research, and previous writing or reviewing experience. Everyone is committed to the production of a quality product."

Guidelines Featured in the NGC Database Must Meet These Criteria
  1. Contain systematically developed statements that include recommendations, strategies, or information that assist healthcare practitioners and patients make decisions about appropriate healthcare for specific clinical circumstances
  2. Be produced under the auspices of medical specialty associations; relevant professional societies, public or private organizations, government agencies at the federal, state, or local level; or healthcare organizations or plans
  3. Be available (full-text version) upon request in print or electronic format (for free or for a fee) in the English language. The guideline must be current and the most-recent version produced. There must be documented evidence that the guideline was developed, reviewed, or revised within the last 5 years.
In addition, corroborating documentation is required; a systematic literature search and review of existing scientific evidence published in peer-reviewed journals must be performed during the guideline's development.

AANN Members Advancing Leadership Skills

Kudos to two AANN members, Elaine Kopp and Jennifer Boyd, who have been accepted into the Sigma Theta Tau's Mentored Leadership Development Program. Sigma Theta Tau is the honor society of nursing and its mission supports learning, knowledge, and professional development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide. Sigma Theta Tau, founded in 1922, derives its name from the Greek words, storge, tharsos, and time, meaning "love," "courage," and "honor." Nurses at any stage of their career can be selected for the 1-year program and will be guided by an accomplished mentor. Pairs participate in group activities and the mentee carries out an individualized leadership development plan. Applicants can then use their new skills in professional or community organizations.
Periodic progress reports about Kopp and Boyd will be reported in Synapse E-News.

Journal of Neuroscience Nursing Update

As we complete the prepublication work for the third issue of JNN published by LWW, it's time to provide you with a few updates. First, our June issue will be the first to include print and online-only articles. As we move forward, each issue will have selected content available only online; this will allow us to expand our page count and to include content readers can use in a timely manner. Online publication also reflects industry trends to publish a "greener" journal (less paper, less ink) and decrease costs—keeping our subscription and advertising rates competitive.
Another new feature available to readers is the JNN online archives. Past issues are now archived electronically and can be retrieved through the journal's Web site, www.JNNOnline.com. Subscribers will no longer have to file and store past issues and can retrieve past issues that may have been lost or tossed.
Finally, we will soon begin a process called "Publish Ahead of Print" (PAP). PAP will give subscribers access to an electronic version of selected articles before they are actually printed and mailed. This feature allows us to highlight the most current research, issues, and content for readers; enhanced visibility; and a shorter waiting time from manuscript acceptance to publication for our authors.

More news and changes are in the works, so keep your eyes on the JNN Web site.

JNN Editor-in-Chief

Member Benefits

Many benefits are associated with your AANN membership. These include
  • professional development awards offered through the Neuroscience Nursing Foundation. The NNF provides education and research opportunities for registered nurses furthering their careers in the neurosciences. The Foundation offers grants to support research, CNRN recertification, and travel to the AANN Annual Educational Meeting each spring. Visit www.aann.org/nnf/grants.htm for more information and applications.
  • membership in the World Federation of Neuroscience Nurses (WFNN), participating in neuroscience nursing on an international level. WFNN, founded in 1969, initially consisted of nursing organizations representing five member countries. During the past 3 decades, a number of neuroscience nursing organizations have been established and have joined the WFNN. In addition, there has been increased development of subspecializations within neuroscience nursing, and, beginning in 1999, neuroscience nursing specialty organizations were able to join the WFNN. Today, there are 15 member organizations representing 32 countries and approximately 5,000 nurses from six continents. AANN members are also WFNN members. Click here to learn more.
